PURPOSE:To improve capacity and life of a shaft seal by sectioning a ring shape chamber in a process of bringing a plurality of lip seal rings in sliding contact with a liner for protecting a propeller shaft sectioning a cistern chamber between the lip seal ring and a labyrinth seal member and sectioning a seawater chamber on the outer side of the seal member. CONSTITUTION:The stern tube shaft sealing device is fixed to a stern member 10 11 by endosing a liner 1 for protecting the propeller shaft therein and is formed of ring shaped housing members 12 to 15. Now a lip seal ring 5 making sliding contact with the liner 1 is held between both housing members 12, 13 toward the inside of the ship and another lip seal ring 4 is held between other two housing members 13, 14 facing toward the stern. A spiral groove labyrinth seal member 9 is then fixed to a housing member 14. On the other hand, a communication channel 18 communicating to the ship interior is drilled so as to keep a ring shape chamber 8, enclosed by both lip seal rings 4, 5, under atmospheric pressure at all times. Further, a cistern chamber 7 is formed by the lip seal ring 4 and the seal member 9d and a seawater chamber 6 for seawater leaking from the seal member 9 is also sectioned. |
