PURPOSE:To obtain the compound useful as an intermediate for biodegradable polymers, etc., in a high selectivity by hydrogenating a dicarboxylic acid diester with hydrogen in the presence of a novel catalyst composed of a ruthenium compound and a 1,10-phenanthroline compound under mild conditions. CONSTITUTION:A dicarboxylic acid diester expressed by formula II [R<2> is 1-6C lower alkyl; (n) is 0 or 1 to 20] to hydrogenated with hydrogen by using a novel catalyst prepared by combining a ruthenium compound expressed by formula I ((x), (y) and (z) are 1-8; R<1> is 1-8C lower alkyl or aryl) [e.g. Ru(CO)2(OOCCH3)] with a 1,10-phenanthroline compound (e.g. 1,10-phenanthroline) to afford a hydroxycarboxylic acid ester. Dimethyl oxalate, dimethyl malonate, methyl adipate, etc., are especially cited as the dicarboxylic acid diester expressed by formula II. A glycolic acid ester, beta-hydroxypropionic acid ester, a gamma-hydroxybutylic acid ester, etc., are obtained according to this method. |
