PURPOSE:To provide a ceramic sliding member maintaining an excellent sliding characteristics over a long period of time by allowing amorphous carbon to exist in the gaps among the ceramic crystal particles at the sliding surface consisting of the ceramics of the ceramic sliding member or at the grain boundaries thereof. CONSTITUTION:A ceramic sintered compact constituting the sliding member is produced and after its sliding surface is subjected to mirror polishing, the sliding surface is subjected to an etching treatment by an acid (e.g.: hydrochloric acid) or alkali (e.g.: NaOH). The grain boundary components of the ceramic crystals are eluted from the surface of the ceramic sintered compact or the ceramic particles themselves are eroded by this treatment, by which the gaps are formed on the surface of the sintered compact. The treated surface is then coated with the amorphous carbon or is impregnated and coated with a material forming the amorphous carbon (e.g.: phenolic resin) by a heat treatment. The amorphous carbon is thereafter formed in the gap among the ceramic crystal particles of the sliding surface or the grain boundaries thereof by a heat treatment. As a result, operating torque is lowered and the change in the torque by the number of operation times is lessened. |
