The object on which the invention is based is to develop a versatile compact cooking and baking appliance by means of which operation, advantageous in terms of energy, both as an open hearth and as a closed cooking or baking space is possible, and in which, to create the cooking or baking space, only part of the hearth area is used as the base area thereof. This object is achieved in that the side walls (4) of the hood (3) possess heat sources radiating inwards and can be folded down into the plane of the cooking zone (2). The invention is employed in cooking and baking appliances which consist of a base body with a cooking zone, with which a swing-open hood is associated in such a way that a cooking and baking space results beneath the hood. <IMAGE>
