For monitoring the running thread, it is conventional to use electronic cleaners which can generate a dynamic thread signal and a cleaner cut-in signal in the event of thread irregularities. The object is further to improve the monitoring of the running thread. For this purpose, according to the invention, a static thread signal is additionally generated and indicates only the presence of the thread in the measuring slot (presence signal). After the lapse of the static thread signal as a result of the exit of the thread from the measuring slot, an isolating pulse is generated. Advantageously, this isolating pulse is stored for a time and is triggered only when the winding process has not been interrupted as a result of other causes. Faults in which the thread has not run through the measuring slot can thereby be recorded. <IMAGE>
