<p>Apparatus comprising a telescopic member, having an inner portion (2) telescopically moveable within a hollow outer portion (3) so as to vary the effective length of the member, has retaining means for releasably retaining the inner portion at a selected position so as to vary the effective length of the member, the apparatus having retaining means for releasably retaining the inner portion (2) at a selected position, lying in a range of possible positions, relative to the outer portion (3), the retaining means comprising a camming member (14) which is connected to the inner portion (2), and a locking member (36) which is contained within the outer portion, the camming member (14) and the locking member (36) being axially moveable relative to each other, wherein said relative movement causes the camming member (14) to urge the locking member (36) against the inner surface of the outer portion (3), thereby to retain the inner (2) and outer portions (3) in said selected position.</p> |
