A lifting device, in particular a lifting device for the lifting collar of a vehicle tow truck with a lifting apparatus (4) which is mounted on a base carrier (2) and a lifting collar which is attached thereto, the lifting collar being mounted in such a way that while the lifting collar is travelling with a vehicle to be towed away the said lifting collar can follow lateral inclinations, occurring as a result of centrifugal forces, of the vehicle to be towed by means of corresponding tilting movements. The lifting device is mounted at the vehicle end (1) of the vehicle to be towed away, and the lifting apparatus (4) is constructed as an articulated structure whose imaginary lateral surfaces, running in the direction of travel of the vehicle to be towed and surrounded by respective articulation elements, form, in accordance with a respective lifting travel, parallelograms with angles corresponding to the lifting travel such that the lifting lever arm is long when the lifting collar is lowered onto the carriageway in order to pick up the vehicle to be towed away and is short when the lifting collar is raised for towing away, there being a relatively short overhang of the towed-away load over the rear axle (3) of the vehicle to be towed away. <IMAGE>
