A printing machine incorporates an arrangement for automatic changing of printing plates without requiring an unduly large amount of space or an overly wide plate cylinder channel. Plate holding devices (10 or 11) are each movable between a position spaced from an associated plate cylinder (3 or 4) and a position in operative connection with the cylinder along a rectilinear guide (14 or 15). The guides are pivotable by pneumatic units (29, 30) so that a hooking or unhooking of a printing plate end portion (18 or 19) into or out of the plate cylinder channel (8 or 9) can take place.
