An anal stent 12 for protecting an anastomosis site following rectal surgery is a tube 4 extending in use from the rectum 10 to the anus 16 and maintains the anus in an open position. The tube has flanges 6, 8 shaped to substantially follow the contours of the rectum 10 and the natal cleft 18 ensuring that the stent is retained comfortably in its desired position. The stent may be inserted at the time of surgery and retained by suturing or inserted afterwards should leakage of the bowel be suspected. <IMAGE> |
