A digital switch controlled, VHF "woken-up" microwave mobile telephone system, comprises mobile apparatus 1c, one or more microwave stations, 2c, mobile switching centre/s, 3c, and a digital switch 4, linked via a VHF radio paging centre, 5p, to VHF radio paging stations, 5. The switch 4, embodies connections/links, 6, to the national telephone network, 7, and the mobile switching centre/s, 3c. Each connection, 6, is allocated a supplementary telephone number for use by incoming callers when the microwave circuits of the mobile apparatus, 1c, are in the switched off or "long sleep life" mode.
