The present invention relates to an artificial respiration tube made from flexible material, which comprises a substance which can be detected from a location outside the body of a person or animal, for determining the position of the tube in the trachea, and at least one inflatable element which is connected to the tube, for closing off the space between the wall of the trachea and the tube and holding the artificial respiration tube in place in the trachea, as well as a line for supplying pressurized medium for inflating the element. The artificial respiration tube according to the invention is characterized in that the inflatable element comprises a substance which can be detected from a location outside the body of a person or animal, in order to monitor the action of the element. An artificial respiration tube of this nature is used for the artificial respiration of patients. With an artifical respiration tube of this nature, it is possible to determine both the location of the artificial respiration tube in the trachea and the correct functioning of the inflatable element. If the detectable substance comprises a substance which does not transmit X-radiation, it is possible to carry out both checks simultaneously by means of a single X-ray. Preferably, the detectable substance is incorporated in the material of the inflatable element as a separate marker in the material. Various forms of the separate marker of the detectable substance are described.
