PURPOSE: To provide technique for constructing an extended filing system on an existent filing system and to provide the concrete method therefor. CONSTITUTION: By stacking (or assembling) new filing systems (layers) 206 and 200 onto existent filing systems 210 and 208, the architecture can extend filing system functionability. The imprementers of the new layers 206 and 200 have options for keeping consistency between files exported by the new layers 206 and 200 and files in the lower layers 210 and 208 and options for sharing the same cache memory with the files in the lower layers 210 and 208.
