The device (D) for controlling the reciprocating movements of a differential piston (1) includes at least one valve associated with each of the parts of different cross-sections of the piston (1), and a rocker mechanism (B) urged by a spring in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the piston (1). The rocker mechanism (B) is designed to operate the valves in terms of closing and/or of opening at the end of each stroke in order to reverse the movement of the piston (1); a push-rod (55) is mounted so it can slide relative to the piston (1), while being able to be driven by this piston, the push-rod being able to come to bear, at the end of each stroke, against a limit stop (s, 14a) connected to the chamber, to cause the mechanism (B) to rock (tilt). The rocking mechanism (B) is contrived to take up internally the transverse forces of the elastic means (44) and to transmit to the push-rod (55) only those forces which are substantially parallel to the direction of movement of this push-rod (55). <IMAGE>
