The invention relates to a method for removing problems caused by the thermal expansion of the shell of a coating bar in a bar coating device 10, in which the coating bar 13, 31 is rotatably supported along its entire length against a bar shell 18, 30, which is fixed to the body of the coating device 10 and composed of one or more parts. According to the invention the thermal expansion of the bar shell 18, 30 and/or parts 34 thereof is ascertained under tensile stress in the transverse direction of the machine.
