A system (188) is enclosed in a vacuum container (193) for insulation, and includes a sealed helium dewar (192) and a closed circulating loop (194) for helium gas. Pump (190) elevates the pressure of the helium gas from about .3MPa to about .4MPa and the temperature of the compressed helium gas is cooled down to the liquid helium temperature in the bottom of the sealed dewar (192) before flowing out through the circulating loop (194) to cool superconducting magnets (39') and cold shield (41'). A reservoir (154) of liquid nitrogen vents after cooling a warm shield (43').
