In a method for conditioning crops which are processed in continuous flow with movable implements of at least one driven implement carrier, the constituents of the crops are introduced into interspaces between the movable implements of the same implement carrier, before at least the stalks are crushed as a result of the narrowing of the interspaces between the implements and thereafter the constituents are discharged again, the interspaces increasing in size. In the device for carrying out the method, the implements (W) are elongate and bar-shaped, finger-shaped or bristle-shaped and are arranged on the implement carrier (T) approximately parallel to one another at a predetermined density setting (G1) with interspaces (Z), in which device transverse spacings (a1) of at least the stalk thickness (d) are present between adjacent implements (W), there are, furthermore, means for introducing the constituents (B) of the crops (E) into the interspaces (Z), and, finally, there is a mechanical device for at least temporarily increasing the density setting of the implements (W) transversely to their longitudinal direction to a value at which the interspaces (a2) between the implements are smaller than the stalk thickness (d).
