Submunitions (11) are catapulted forwards out of a carrier projectile (10) when a rocket motor (12) in the carrier projectile is no longer accelerating the submunitions. A catapulting force is produced on a piston head (43) by means of the pressure of gases from the rocket motor and acts on rear surfaces (26) of the submunitions, and becomes so great that it shears shear pins (34) which connect the submunitions to the carrier projectile, but only when the reaction forces of the submunitions (11) on the piston (43) decay as a result of the acceleration. The submunitions are preferably moved outwards from the carrier projectile at the time of separation, preferably by rotation of the load-bearing structure of the submunitions about the longitudinal axis of the carrier projectile. <IMAGE>
