The invention relates to a motor vehicle lighting system which serves to increase traffic safety. When motor vehicles travel in the dusk and at night and in rain and fog, the outlines of vehicles, in particular when there is dazzling from oncoming traffic, are often impossible to make out. The intention is that by virtue of additional lighting it will be possible for the outline of the vehicle to be perceived better by other road users. At the same time, the intention is that the carriageway will be able to be observed better in the region of the vehicle illuminated in this way. Additional dazzling of other road users does not take place. These conditions are fulfilled by the motor vehicle lighting system according to the invention in which additional lights (1) are provided on the front walls, rear walls and side walls at a specific height and in a specific number, which additional lights (1) are arranged in such a way that their light cones (2) are directed along the vehicle perpendicular to the carriageway. As a result, the part of the vehicle under the additional lights (1) is illuminated and a relatively narrow strip of carriageway is also lit by the light cone (2). The invention can be applied in all motor vehicles.
