A lid made of flat metal material for containers consisting of sheet metal, which lid is provided with a bent-over rim with a roll diameter and a profile such that it can be fitted onto the bent-over rim of the container and can be deformed in such a way that it grips below the container rim, subsequently forming a press-formed, tight seam between the lid and the container, the flat material having a thickness of 0.19 mm or less, and the rim being formed, starting from the free edge, with a peripheral corrugation or toothing of very small division such that the approximately parallel apex lines of the corrugations or tooth tips extend approximately perpendicular to the lower edge of the lid rim.
