A method for automatically preparing a prescribed quantity of a coffee drink from a prescribed quantity of ground coffee and a prescribed quantity of hot water which corresponds to the latter is described, the finished coffee drink being accommodated in a supply container and being drawn off therefrom in a concentration corresponding to the drinking strength. In order to be able to draw the coffee drink from the supply container even during the coffee drink preparation cycle, it is proposed that only a proportion of the quantity of hot water prescribed for the production of the hot drink be guided through the ground coffee for extraction and that the rest of the hot water be allowed to flow into the supply container by circumventing the ground coffee at the start of the preparation cycle. The respective proportions are determined in such a way that the coffee drink is of drinking strength in the supply container while the hot water is being fed and the supply of hot water is terminated before the concentration of the proportion which has flown through the ground coffee falls below drinking strength. <IMAGE>
