The invention relates to an apparatus for the resistance welding of metal sheets (10, 11) by means of welding electrodes (14, 15, 31, 54, 55), in particular for the spot welding of aluminium sheets. Here, apart from a primary motion-initiating element (18) serving to build up the electrode force and initiate the electrode closing movement, there is a further, secondary motion-initiating element which is allocated to the electrode (14, 15, 31, 54, 55) and is designed as an actuator (19, 44, 58, 59, 60) utilising the piezoelectric effect in its reversal action. Such an apparatus provides a wide range of possibilities for influencing the actual welding process.
