The invention relates to a method for the chemical or electrolytic surface treatment of workpieces, in the form of boards, in aqueous solutions, in particular of large-area multilayer printed circuit boards which are provided with contact holes and are intended for printed circuits; the invention also relates to devices for carrying out the method. The workpiece, which is situated in a horizontal operating position, executes a combined movement, which is constituted by two separate and mutually independent relative movements with respect to the surrounding treatment solution. The workpiece carries out a first sliding (gliding) movement, preferably continuously and in longitudinally extending tracks, in the transport direction in a horizontal plane, and executes a second movement simultaneously or intermittently at periodic intervals, which second movement comprises vibration oscillations pulsating intensely in rapid succession. <IMAGE>
