The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for the purification of pourable materials having organic impurities, particularly of sands, which are drawn off, for example, from sewage treatment plants, in which the pourable material is fed to a mixing apparatus, in which the material, with the addition of a liquid, is circulated and mixed, and in which the material mixed with the liquid is discharged from the mixing apparatus and supplied to a classifying apparatus. A simplification of processes of this type is achieved in that there is used as a mixing apparatus a mixing drum which has a material feed and a material discharge, water is introduced as liquid into the mixing drum, and the mixture of water and of pourable material discharged from the mixing drum is separated in the classifying apparatus into, on the one hand, purified material and, on the other hand, sewage and organic impurities which are finally drawn off.
