In order to be able to carry out several assembly steps in an assembly line on various sides of a workpiece to be completed, an assembly carrier is proposed which accommodates the workpiece on a supporting arm via an adapter, the supporting arm being rotatable by defined angular degrees by means of a stepping gear. In a turning station, a rotary device can be coupled to the input shaft of the, for example, globoidal stepping gear. In assembly stations, the assembly device movable in the vertical direction towards the workpiece is provided with a float-along unit.
