The process for purifying highly mercury-polluted flue gases, in particular flue gases from sewage sludge incineration plants, by preliminary purification and a preferably two-stage wet flue gas desulphurisation, in which the sulphur arises in the form of flue gas gypsum, the preliminary purification being carried out by 1. a HCl-binding component being added to the solid absorbent in stage c and 2. the purified desulphurised flue gas already reheated being given a second purification by injection of finely divided activated carbon, activated coke, hearth-furnace coke or molecular sieves as solid absorbent into the clean gas stream and removal of the laden absorbent by means of a cloth filter, the only very slightly contaminated solid absorbent resulting in this case being recycled to stage c.
