Determn. of mercury liberated from dental amalgams comprises rinsing the mouth with a nontoxic mixt. of immiscible polar and non-polar solvents for 2-4 min.; collection of the washings; sepn. of the polar and non-polar fractions; and then determination of ionic Hg in the polar fraction and non-ionic Hg in the non-polar fraction, e.g. by atomic absorption spectroscopy. A typical polar solvent is aq. NaCl (0.5-2.0 wt.%; 15 cm3), and a typical non-polar solvent is thin liquid paraffin (pharmaceutical quality) or olive oil (15 cm3).
