This invention relates to novel ion-conducting materials suitable for use as solid polymer electrolyte membranes in electrochemical applications includin g fuel cell systems. More specifically, these novel ion-conducting polymers ar e based on sulfonated polyaryletherketone polymers or sulfonated polyphenylsulfone polymers, including copolymers, or blends thereof. The present invention also describes novel processes for producing these ion- conducting materials.
