The television receiver has luminance and chrominance input terminals for receiving separate luminance (Y) and chrominance (C) component signals of a video signal from a VCR playing a pre-recorded video tape, and includes a wide-screen display screen. The chrominance input terminal receives the chrominance component signal of the video signal, and an indicator signal for indicating that the prerecorded video tape contains images which have been optically horizontally compressed. A filter coupled to the chrominance input terminal couples the indicator signal to an output and decouples the chrominance signal from the output. A device coupled to the filter output receives and detects the indicator signal. A display controller causes the image to be displayed across the entire width of the screen w.r.t. the detection of the indicator signal, which is a DC signal. |
