The method includes the step of dividing a completed input sequence (sigin) of symbols (bit) according to their temporal position into at least two input sequences (seql...seqn). The input sequences are individually coded through respectively one external code (oc1...ocn) to form output sequences (oecseql...oecseqn). The output sequences are combined in a symbol output sequence (sigout) which is coded through an internal code (ic). The divided input sequences are preferably coded with a respectively different external code. The external coding consists preferably of a folding encoding or a block encoding, and the internal coding of a folding encoding, a block encoding, or a modulation.
