Compounds of formula (I) wherein: R1 is selected from optionally substituted alkyl, acyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, hetercycle and optionally substituted aminocarbonyl; R2 is a linear or branced alkylene group; R3 is a group X or Y; X is selected from alkyl, acyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aminoalkyl, hydroxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, aminocarboxyalkyl, mercaptoalkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl and heterocycle; Y is a group of the formula T-U-V (V being bonded to the sulphur atom) in which T represents an aryl group or a heterocycle, U represents a single bond, a sulphur atom, an oxygen atom, an NH or C=O group, or a group of the formula -R8O-, R8NH-, -R8OR9-, -R8SR9-, -R8NHR9-, R8-COR9- or -R9- in which R8 is an alkylene group and R9 is an arylene or heteroarylene group, wherein R8 is bonded to the T moiety and R9 is bonded to the V moiety; and V is an alkylene group; R4 is selected from alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, arylalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, heterocycle or alkyl substituted heterocycle when R3 is Y or R4 is selected from biaryl, arylheteroaryl and heteroarylaryl when R3 is X or Y. These compounds are useful as metalloprotease inhibitors.
