Production of thin glass articles comprises supplying a low viscosity glass mass into a lower tool (1); and compression molding the glass mass by joining an upper tool (4) with the lower tool. The surface roughness Rz of the tools lies between 5 and 15 mu m and the glass gob (2) is preformed between the supply step and the compression step using acceleration forces. Acceleration forces of 1-10 g (gravitational acceleration) are achieved.
