PURPOSE: To support a mixed network environment containing many isochronal and/or non-isochronal LAN protocols, such as the isochronal Ethernet, Ethernet, isochronal token-ring, token-ring, and other isochronal LAN, or other LAN systems. CONSTITUTION: A support for a mixes environment includes a protocol detecting mechanism performed in a hand-shake system. The hand-shake system realizes an accurate protocol by deciding the signal generating ability at the end point of a link. This makes it possible to automatically detect the presence of another LAN facility, such as the Ethernet, token-ring, etc., at the other end of a network cable. When detection occurs, the isochronal LAN facility returns to the LAM operation in a compliance mode. Typically, only a hub has an ability of operating in different networked modes, such as the Ethernet, token-ring, isochronal mode, etc. The hub hears several identification forms on the type of an offered service, such as the isochronal or non-isochronal Ethernet, token- ring, and other LAN service from a connected node.
