PURPOSE: To provide a continuous passive exercise device which guarantees complete stretching of the legs in such a way that during stretching the shins do not move forward with respect to the thighs and that during bending variations in leg angle have a continuous positive or negative rate of change, and which allows the patient to positively stop device operation. CONSTITUTION: This continuous passive exercise device 10 comprises a base 12; first linkage assemblies 14, 18 attached to the base to form a first joint; second linkage assemblies 16, 20 forming a second joint and attached to the first linkage assemblies to form a support part for the legs, the second linkage assemblies being movable with respect to the first joint so that when the first linkage assemblies are closed the second joint is isolated from the first joint, and so that when the first linkage assemblies are opened the second joint is brought close to the first joint; and a means for opening and closing the first linkage assemblies.
