The invention relates to a method of checking the state of a buried cable (22), of the type comprising a metal screen (20) and a mechanical protective sheath (23), in which, at the time when the cable is laid, possible defects in the mechanical sheath are detected by applying a low voltage (V) to one end of the cable between the metal screen and earth, by measuring the fault resistance, at this same end of the cable, between the screen and earth, and by comparing the measured value with a defined value (R) so as to detect the existence of a fault prejudicial to the correct operation of the cable.
