Before certain organically polluted bulk materials, obtained for example as filter or foundry dusts, can be recycled or landfilled they have to be subjected to a treatment to incinerate their organic component. The invention achieves an efficient and complete incineration by passing the bulk materials through a fluid bed while gasifying and burning their organic constituents in a first main combustion zone and any remainder in an afterburning zone. <IMAGE>
