The joint fitting comprises a joint component which can pivot with the backrest and a joint component which is assigned to the backrest and is fixed in the position of use of the seat. The fixed joint component is connected at its front end facing away from the joint eyelet to the seat component so as to be capable of pivoting by means of a pin for folding forward the backrest while its rear end region interacts with a stop fixed to the seat component. A catch hook which is provided with a hook mouth is pivotably coupled to the joint component coupled to the seat component, a locking device being assigned to the said catch hook, which locking device has an adjustable lever which is rotatably mounted on the fixed joint component and is connected to a locking thumb which is loaded by a spring element in the locking direction and is also mounted on the fixed joint component and secures the catch hook in its locked position. The bearing face, engaging behind the stop, of the hook mouth, has an angle of inclination above self locking. In order to permit on the one hand a compact design and on the other hand to be able to secure the open position of the catch hook during the pivoting movement of the backrest, the adjustment lever is connected to the locking thumb with the inclusion of a small degree of tangential play, it being possible to secure the catch hook to the locking thumb by means of a catch in order to keep the hook mouth of the catch hook open.
