A method and devices for the automatic exchange of the impression cylinder in a rotary printing machine, the printing element having a guide on the inner side of each side part, on which guide the bearing journal of an impression cylinder rolls, each guide having a cutout to receive the journal of the impression cylinder in the printing position of the cylinder, and a conveying device being arranged below each guide on the side part of the printing element, which conveying device is formed by a chain ring which has carrier arms that project from the chain and can be brought into operative connection with stops or openings of a cylinder conveying carriage. During the moving-in operation of the conveying carriage which receives the impression cylinder, the impression cylinder is raised from the carriage by means of its outer journals and is placed in the cutout in the guide whereas, when the carriage is moved out, the cylinder is raised out of the cutout of the guide by means of its journals in order to be placed back in the receiver of the conveying carriage.
