A video endoscope (10) includes a removable core (15) with an objective lens (19) at the distal end thereof and an image sensor (16, 17) slidably mounted therein. The image sensor circuit board is connected by means of a cable (18) to a video control unit (24), from which signals are transmitted to a video monitor (26). A separable channel section sheath (11), which is provided in a sterile condition, removably receives the core (15). The separable channel section of the sheath (11) is disposable after use on a patient and the core (15) is prepared for reuse with another separable sterile sheath on the next patient. Light transmitting fibers (14) can be integral with the housing or core (15) or inserted into at least one of the channels in the channel section sheath (14).
