A system for continuously monitoring tensioned reinforcement in n structure (10), such as for example bridges or modern buildings, has a plurality of detectors (D1, D2, D3) randomly and conveniently positioned about the structure (10). The detectors (D1, D2, D3) are responsive to acoustic or seismic energy emissions to produce a signal. The signals associated with reinforcement failure are analyzed (14) to locate the site of reinforcement failure. The system is simple and yet highly sensitive when compared to previously known monitoring systems.
