A crate useful for the handling of heavy rolls of sheet material, in particular of pressure sensitive material, is described, containing a frame (1) wall (3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5, 6) and a hammock-type (2) means for retaining the roll. The front-, back-, side- and top walls can be opened to facilitate loading and unloading. The crate is reusable, has no loose parts, is refoldable when empty and is stackable in empty as well as in loaded form.
