Pharmaceutical developments to date targeted at the lipoxygenase-mediating arachidonic acid metabolism have concentrated almost exclusively on 5-lipoxygenase, and the described inhibitor substances are associated with complicated ways of synthesis. 2-Hydroxyphenyl-substituted 1,2,4-triazoles and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles of the general formula I have the property of inhibiting 5-lipoxygenase. The compounds according to the invention have a relatively simple structure and can easily be prepared by reacting amidines with salicyl hydrazides or amide oximes with carbonyl chlorides. The compounds according to the invention are used as pharmaceutical agents with wide therapeutic applicability, such as for the therapy and prophylaxis of bronchial asthma, psoriasis, inflammatory and allergic disorders. <IMAGE> in which R, X and Y have the meaning stated in Claim 1.
