A process and an apparatus for the packaging of a material-web roll (1) are specified, in which the roll is surrounded on all sides with packaging material (8, 5) and the packaging material is closed, particularly by means of a folding device (10) for folding axial projections (9) of the packaging web onto the end face of the roll and a device for affixing an outer end cover. There is a risk, here, that during the packaging of the roll (1), air is also included and, when the roll is deposited on its end face, causes the packaging to burst open. In order to prevent this, before the closing operation some of the air mass is removed from inside the packaging material and, after the closing operation the volume of included air is reduced, for example by means of a heating device (14, 19, 21) which is provided for heating at least some of the air in a volume limited by the packaging web (8, 9). <IMAGE>
