An image-producing device is described in which a toner image is produced on a photoconductive drum or a similar image carrier and is then transferred, by means of an intermediate transfer body, e.g. a belt, to a paper or a similar transfer medium and is then fixed (fused) on the medium by means of a fixing device. Directly after the transfer of a toner image of the last colour which is to be placed over the other toner images on the intermediate transfer body, the circumferential speed of the belt is switched to a relatively low speed which matches a fixing and paper-transporting speed. At this moment, the belt is then moved away from the drum. The length of the transfer medium and the distance between a paper-transfer position and a fixing position are compared. In the case of a relatively short transfer medium, the circumferential speed of the belt is not switched to low speed.
