Monoclonal antibody (DSM ACC1213) which binds only to forms of CD44 containing the amino acid sequence encoded by exon v6, but not to the 90 kilodalton standard lymphocyte form of CD44 and the use of such antibodies for detecting the presence of CD44v6 in tissues or cells, for determining if epithelial tissue from an animal or human has undergone malignant transformation, for determining the metastatic potential of malignant cells and for detecting inflammatory diseases in patients.
