The invention relates to a static carrier material/biofilm system installed in open or closed reaction chambers for the more efficient and economic purification of contaminated gas and water streams on a microbial basis. The object of developing a static carrier material/biofilm system which has a simple design and is easily handled, operates economically and stably, is self-regenerating under preset process and environment conditions and suits the material system (gas, water) to be treated is achieved by constructing, in one or more open or closed reaction containers, static piles with characteristic parameters (voidage and specific external surface area) of carrier material elements whose geometrical parameters form an optimal ratio to one another and to the reaction chamber and which preferably consist of wastes and residues, on whose true external surface exposed biofilms, which remain stable over long periods, are constructed with the aid of starter and/or microorganism suspensions related to the material system, which biofilms automatically adapt in short times to changing environment and process conditions and material systems.
