Described are anthraquinone compounds conforming to the formula (1) <IMAGE> where M is hydrogen or an alkali metal or the mole equivalent of an alkaline earth metal; A is a radical of the formula (2) <IMAGE> where M is defined above, m is zero or 1, and B is phenylene which can be substituted by from 1 to 4 substituents selected from the group consisting of 2 sulpho, 1 carboxyl, 4 alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and 2 alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or is alkylene, phenylene-alkylene or alkylene-phenylene, in which case the alkylene radicals are those of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the phenylene radicals are unsubstituted or substituted by 1, 2 or 3 substituents selected from the group consisting of alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and sulpho, or is cyclohexylene, alkylene-cyclohexylene, cyclohexylene-alkylene or alkylene-cyclohexylene-alkylene, in which case the cyclohexylene radicals can additionally be substituted by 1 or 2 methyl groups and the alkylene radicals are those of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or is a radical of the formula -phen-D-phen-, in which each phen is, independently of the other, a phenylene radical which is unsubstituted or substituted by 1 or 2 substituents selected from the group consisting of sulpho, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms and alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and D is a direct bond or a group of the formula -NH-, -O-, -SO2-, -CO-NH-, -NH-CO-, -SO2-NH-, -NH-SO2- or -SO2-NH-SO2-; R<1> ...
