The essential features of the invention are that the regulating variable for the regulator can be determined by forming the quotient of the measured grain precipitation on the threshing basket at the moment t and a sum formed from the measured grain precipitation on a screen of the cleaning device at the same moment t and a quantity which can be determined as the difference between the grain precipitation on the threshing basket at the moment t and the grain precipitation on the threshing basket at the moment t - DELTA t.
