<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rear projection type projector capable of enhancing the efficiency of light utilization by preventing futile irradiation of light even when an actual projection range capable of actually visualizing the projected image is the range of a shape different from the aspect ratio of liquid crystal, and miniaturizing the projector by preventing excessive enlargement of the image. <P>SOLUTION: The optical axis R-S of modulation light projected on a screen projection surface 30 is inclined with respect to the normal N-N of the screen projection surface 30 and the modulation light is projected on the trapezoidal range ABCD storing the actual projection range EFGH. Further, a reflective mirror 20 is disposed on the back side of the screen projection surface 30, a projection part 10 that projects the modulation light is disposed on the side of the screen projection surface 30 and the modulation light is once projected backward and, thereafter, is refracted by the reflective mirror 20.
