In order to sort packages of different types, in particular rigid and semi-rigid hollow plastic packages, the tips (7) of needles (4) are made to act on the packages (1) at a specific temperature and with a specific force so that, depending on the different types of packages, each of the said tips (7) either perforates or does not perforate a package which is thus either impaled and held in this position on the body of at least one needle (4), or is not impaled, and the different types of packages (1) are separated depending on whether they are or are not impaled on the said needles (4).
