The diesel engine (3) with injection pump (4), which is intended for driving motor vehicles, drives a hydraulic variable-displacement pump (5). Connected up via hoses is a hydraulic variable-displacement motor (8) which, via a gearbox (12), drives the driven wheels (16, 18) of the vehicle. To limit the speed of this diesel engine (3) to about 2/3 of the maximum speed, there is a stop (22). A stop (26) which interacts with the variable-displacement pump (5) is also provided and this stop removes the limitation on the output of the variable-displacement pump (5) when the stop (22) for limiting the speed of the engine is engaged. There is an interlock between the two stops (22, 26). This allows a noise reduction since the engine does not have to run at maximum speed at the permissible driving speed. <IMAGE>
